Our program incorporates several field trips throughout the year that lines up with our themes. We have wonderful community partners that participate in areas including Read-A-Loud in the classrooms. We have several volunteers that help in our offices with filing, answering the phones, etc. We also receive monthly donations from our Christian Appalachian Project in Corbin KY. We have several church groups that donate children's clothing and classroom usable items throughout the year, also. It is a struggle sometimes to meet our amount, but again, we have wonderful parents and community partners from businesses and our local libraries and local schools that help us with inkind.
I understand that non federal share is only for items that HS/EHS would normally pay for. We struggle with meeting our share due to so many things that do not meet this criteria. Vendors aren't necessarily friendly in giving us a discount just because we are a Head Start provider. We are really interested in what other programs do.
Volunteer time and homework sheets, specifically, are a big source of NFS for us.
We get a lot of donations from the community, but we can't count most of those things (clothing, etc) because we wouldn't spend grant dollars to buy them.
I'd suggest that if you aren't already, you get connected with your county Justice Services program. They coordinate people who have to do court-ordered community service and can place them in local non-profit agencies to either volunteer or do projects/make things for you. They can do all sorts of projects for us that we can count for NFS- landscaping, building maintenance, setting up for events, etc. They can also build things that we can count, like bookshelves, step stools, wooden benches, they make blankets that we use for naptime, they build wooden toys, and they can fix some of our toys that are broken.

Mattaya A.: How do you enter a health event in childplus if the child was absent on the screening days? Do you later go back into the event and add actions when a screen is done? What do you input as the status? Do you change the status?

jennifero: We often work with the USDA/CCFP nutritionists at the state level - their services are free of charge. I am in FL, but I would imagine that each state would have this type of support attached to their USDA programs.
